Description
If you have hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease, toxic multinodular goiter, etc.) then you might want to consider the thyroid calming bundle.
- Can help support the thyroid in those with hyperthyroidism
- The research shows that L-carnitine can potentially benefit some people with hyperthyroidism
- Lemon balm has a calming effect and can inhibit TSH receptor binding
The thyroid calming bundle includes the following:
SMT-Carnitine. There are certain natural agents that can help support the thyroid in those with hyperthyroidism, and the research shows that L-carnitine can potentially benefit some people with hyperthyroidism. One study showed that L-carnitine inhibits both triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) entry into the cell nuclei (1). The authors of the study showed that 2 and 4 grams per day of oral L-carnitine is capable of reversing hyperthyroid symptoms as well as preventing (or minimizing) the appearance of hyperthyroid symptoms. Although the same study showed that in some cases it can even be useful in the most serious form of hyperthyroidism (thyroid storm), keep in mind that this isn’t the case with everyone, and there is a time and place for antithyroid medication. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis). This herb is commonly recommended for those with hyperthyroidism for a few different reasons. First of all, lemon balm inhibits TSH receptor binding, which causes decreased production of T3 and T4 in the thyroid gland (2). In addition, lemon balm has a calming effect, and may offer support for those suffering with anxiety and/or insomnia (3).
SMT-Mag. SMT-Mag is a highly absorbable form of magnesium, where a magnesium ion is bound between two glycine amino acids, forming a very stable chelate, which eliminates the traditional loose stools or upset stomach that may occur with magnesium supplementation. Mineral chelates can bypass normal modes of absorption in the intestine and therefore, avoid the competition that occurs between minerals for absorption. In this way, larger amounts of magnesium pass through the intestine and are available to the body.
Although both people with hyperthyroid and hypothyroid conditions commonly demonstrate a magnesium deficiency in clinical practice, the research shows that those with hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease are more likely to be deficient in magnesium. In fact, a few studies not only show that magnesium is lower in hyperthyroidism, but that treatment with the antithyroid medication Methimazole helped to increase the magnesium levels (4) (5).
