Magnesium is a cofactor in hundreds of enzymatic reactions.  In the past it was thought that it was involved in about 300 of these biochemical reactions, but over the years it’s been realized that it’s involved in many more.  Many people are deficient in magnesium, including those with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions.  However, not all magnesium supplements are the same.

• SMT-Mag contains highly absorbable magnesium with each capsule providing 150 mg of elemental magnesium

SMT-Mag is a highly absorbable form of magnesium, where a magnesium ion is bound between two glycine amino acids, forming a very stable chelate, which eliminates the traditional loose stools or upset stomach that may occur with magnesium supplementation. Mineral chelates can bypass normal modes of absorption in the intestine and therefore, avoid the competition that occurs between minerals for absorption. In this way, larger amounts of magnesium pass through the intestine and are available to the body. The unique process of “sandwiching” magnesium between the glycine molecules also protects it from being bound by dietary compounds, further enhancing its availability

Although both people with hyperthyroid and hypothyroid conditions commonly demonstrate a magnesium deficiency in clinical practice, the research shows that those with hyperthyroidism and Graves’ Disease are more likely to be deficient in magnesium.*  In fact, a few studies not only show that magnesium is lower in hyperthyroidism, but that treatment with the antithyroid medication Methimazole helped to increase the magnesium levels (1) (2).
