There are certain natural agents that can help support the thyroid in those with hyperthyroidism, and the research shows that L-carnitine can potentially benefit some people with hyperthyroidism. That being said, some people with hyperthyroidism do need to take antithyroid medication, and people with hyperthyroidism who are interested in taking a natural approach should ideally should work with a natural healthcare practitioner.

What Does The Research Show?
One study showed that L-carnitine inhibits both triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) entry into the cell nuclei (1). The authors of the study showed that 2 and 4 grams per day of oral L-carnitine is capable of reversing hyperthyroid symptoms as well as preventing (or minimizing) the appearance of hyperthyroid symptoms. Although the same study showed that in some cases it can even be useful in the most serious form of hyperthyroidism (thyroid storm), keep in mind that this isn’t the case with everyone, and there is a time and place for antithyroid medication.
Another study showed that L-carnitine in combination with selenium significantly reduced symptoms associated with subclinical hyperthyroidism (2).
It was also mentioned earlier that L-carnitine can improve high intensity exercise performance, as a study showed that supplementing with 3 to 4 grams of L-carnitine between 60 and 90 minutes for 9 to 24 weeks improved high-intensity exercise performance (3).
Acetyl-l-carnitine has been shown to support the mitochondria (4), the brain (5), and also has been shown to have antioxidant properties (6).
