Q & A EPISODE

Your Thyroid Questions Answered

Are algae-based supplements a good substitute for fish oils? What’s the best approach to heavy metal detox? Can hyperthyroidism cause periodontal disease? Is it okay to use bugleweed for the long term?

Today, I’m back with another Q&A episode, answering multiple questions submitted by the Save My Thyroid community. While I can’t get to everyone’s questions every time, I love creating these for you, and I’ll do similar episodes every couple of months. Please share your questions with me by emailing info@naturalendocrinesolutions.com, and I’ll include the ones that are relevant to the most listeners.

During this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Q1: How do algae-based supplements compare to fish oils?
    • Limitations of algae-based supplements

  • Q2: I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and I’ve been on Synthroid/levothyroxine for 33 years. Is there a way to get off the meds?
    • Typically, the higher the dose, the more difficult it is to come off the medication
    • You need to do things to address the root cause of the problem
    • Factors that affect your ability to get off of thyroid medication

  • Q3: I’m reading studies on Graves’ and probiotics. Which one would you recommend, especially for mood and brain fog? And some studies say that Lactobacillus is not good for Graves’. Why not?
    • The importance of looking into the cause of mood issues and brain fog
    • What research tells us about the potential effects of lactobacillus-based probiotics on Graves’ disease
      • Jiang, W., Yu, X., Kosik, R. O., Song, Y., Qiao, T., Tong, J., Liu, S., Fan, S., Luo, Q., Chai, L., Lv, Z., & Li, D. (2021). Gut Microbiota may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of Graves’ disease. Thyroid, 31(5), 810–820. https://doi.org/10.1089/thy.2020.0193

    • Different binders used for detoxing heavy metals
    • My preferred approach to gently detoxing mercury

  • Q5: Can hyperthyroidism cause gum recession?
    • What research shows about the connection between hypothyroidism and gum health

  • Q6: I have Graves’ but never have any symptoms – I feel great. I took bugleweed for a few years, and my hormone levels became normal, but I still had the autoimmune component. Recently, my hormone levels were not normal anymore, so I started the bugleweed once again. Is it safe to stay on bugleweed for a very long time?
    • The safety and duration of using bugleweed for Graves’ disease
    • My observations based on experiences with patients

  • Q7: I was quite sick for a couple of years. This resulted in my only option being to remove my thyroid. What happens when you have your thyroid removed? I still have a couple of symptoms that feel like Graves’ even though my levels are okay.
