Thyroid Autoimmunity Chat with Dr. Ben Weitz

“The modern world is an assault on our immune system.” – Dr. Ben Weitz

From the chemicals we put on our skin to the increase in processed foods and toxic chemicals in our everyday lives, it’s no wonder that autoimmune conditions are on the rise. The good news is that people are becoming more aware of the dangers, and eating organic and doing other things to reduce your toxic load is becoming more accessible. Unfortunately, it’s an uphill battle.

Today, I’m talking to Dr. Ben Weitz about a functional medicine approach to thyroid autoimmunity. Dr. Ben has been a Certified Sports Chiropractor and Functional Medicine practitioner for more than 35 years and has worked with professional sports teams. He wrote a book in 1998, The Back Relief Book, and has published several papers on the prevention of injuries in weight training. Dr. Ben is currently working on a book on Longevity, and he has a weekly podcast, Rational Wellness, now in its 6th year, devoted to all things Functional Medicine.

In this conversation, Dr. Ben and I discuss the prevalence of autoimmune conditions, how our diet and environmental toxins affect the immune system, Dr. Ben’s experience with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, why we need to identify and remove underlying triggers, the risks and benefits of avoiding medication for thyroid conditions, and more. Enjoy the episode!
